Derrick Hand

Overview of position

The derrick hand is responsible for everything that is above ground on the rig. Derrick hands handle the uppermost section of the drilling string as it is brought from or lowered into the wellbore or drill hole. They also perform as the lead role in stacking drill pipe as it is tripped out or guiding the pipe as it is reconnected to the pipe string when tripping back into the hole. The derrick hand is 3rd in command behind the tool pusher and the operator / relief operator.

Reports To

Tool Pusher, Operator

  • Perform all well servicing tasks from an elevated position (rod basket or tubing board)
  • Pick up and lay down tubing
  • Drive crew truck when needed
  • Lift, remove, install and operate well-head pump, jacks, and other tasks as designated by the operator or client company official
  • Position, lift, attach, install and work with matting board, tubing, rods, casing, and associated well equipment such as rod strippers, polish rods, etc.
  • Operate rod wrenches, tongs, elevators, and other associated rig tools and equipment
  • Report safety hazards, near misses, accidents or maintenance issues to the
  • Safety Consultant
  • Complete required safety inspections and work plans. Participate in JSA preparation and presentation
  • Assist with rigging up and rigging down workover rig
  • Participate in picking up and laying down tubing
  • Work the floors and other positions on the rig as necessary

To successfully perform this position a worker must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The following qualifications are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

  • Must be competent in effective communication, both oral and written
  • Must have problem solving and organization skills
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, and lift objects of up to 75 pounds for extended periods of time
  • Must have workover rig experience
  • Must be able to work in a team environment
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions in a fast paced and high stress environment
  • Must be able to work at heights
